After watching Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest for the first time last week, (excellent, by the way) a few things really stuck with me. The big one, Cary Grant’s suit.
When I went to investigate the suit further, I came to find out I am not the only one interested. How had I not previously known that Grant’s handsome suit was not only named the best suit in film history but also the most influential. Blog after blog has gone into explicit detail over this suit, so I will keep this a short tribute. It is hard not to notice the suit right away. Simple and classy, my personal favorite pair in fashion. GQ comments in their 2006 list, “The three-button suit (with a roll-over lapel and no vents in the back) is worn nearly the entirety of the frenetically paced film, and its impact is unparalleled.”
I mean, this suit, ah. Every man needs to own a suit like this. Clean lines, great fit, grey on grey. Pants hit at Grant’s natural waist, elongating his legs. He just appears like a tall glass of style perfection. Which considering he spends most of the movie on the run, speaks great lengths.
Looks like Grant was quite the fashionisto himself, there is this great article on his style and the suit here.
